THE PHENOMENON OF POLARIZATION, BLACK-AND-WHITE THINKING, AND THE IMMATURE NEED TO BE RIGHT
The Australians are quite proactive in the area of climate change, probably owing to their status as an island continent (of course, surrounded by water). In this forum, speaker after speaker offers data-driven fact after fact to show the impact of human behavior on climate change, yet the response of people (whether in Australia or the United States) is:
- I’m either 100% for it or against it (no gray area)
- If I’m for it, I only listen to, read, believe the information that supports “for it” (and I discount the opposite)
- I label those on the opposing side as 100% wrong (not just somewhat wrong)
- My “opinions” are VERY closely linked to my political views, religious views, and the views of the family, relatives, locale in which I was raised and in which I currently live (in other words, my socio-economic class). And yes, we are still living in a class-oriented society.
The problem with the above model of self-centered, immature thinking is that any real change or improvement is rendered practically impossible. Instead of the mature embracing of differences and diversity, we ACTIVELY LOOK for the slightest excuse to label “them” as “wrong,” “the enemy,” and then we wonder why humanity is getting more and more destructive, deadly, and dysfunctional.
